Kara Sigler's mom planted the seed that eventually
bloomed into a full-blown love of herbs. In the years since going on
plant walks with her mom in the Sierras she has dedicated herself to
herbs and healing full time--as a student and as a
professional. Kara is eager to do her part in filling the many
gaps found in allopathic medicine and has transformed her original
passion for women's health into a broader goal of helping the
greater community achieve happiness through well being.
Currently, Kara is seeing clients as a Clinical
Herbalist and has completed her third-year internship
studies at Ohlone Center's community herbal clinic in Berkeley,
Calif. She also holds a BA in Cultural Theory from Scripps
College in southern California.
Her work as a lab technician at KW Botanicals in
San Anselmo, Calif., is quite a long way from the days as an
apprentice under the only acupuncturist in her native Tuolumne
County. Kara's diverse experiences have helped cultivate an
interdisciplinary approach to herbs that mainly refers to Western
Herbal Medicine; her growing knowledge of medicinal plants is
tempered by an understanding of the Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs (or
systems). In fact, the Ayurvedic formula for women called Kumari
Asava offered Kara her first glimpse into the powerful healing
potential of plants.
You'll find Red Root (Ceanothus) and Kava Kava
(Piper methisticum) at the top of Kara's seasonal list these days.
She likes Red Root–who’s roots look like a pair of veined legs-- for
its ability to disperse lymphatic congestion in the pelvic region;
Kava Kava passes the test on nights when it's hard to sleep.
Prolific herbalists Pam Fischer, Kami McBride,
Donna D'Terra, Karen Aguiar, Teri Jensen and Autumn Summers are
among the teachers who've expanded Kara's love and understanding of
Western medicinal plants, seaweeds and mushrooms..
